Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometer

GCMS (Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometer) is in fact organized by two instruments with different functions, namely a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer. The gas chromatograph is an instrument that separates compounds into different elements. Fast growing techniques established via utilizing GC has extended applications of the instrument on a wide variety of fields in industry as well as academic research. Structure and principle of GC is actually simple, i.e. different distributive flow rates of a variety of elements under fixed liquid and flowing gas modes determine the separation of elements. Static liquid is often put on solid supporting materials, where sample is put into the gas flow of column. Different elements then pass through the liquid on the supporting materials with different flow rates. Separation of elements thus is determined because of contact of the liquid and different elements, where different vaporized pressures of elements leave the column in different speeds.
If the gas chromatograph is connected to a mass spectrometer, then the molecular weight and structure of different elements can be detected, since the sample is illuminated by electrons in the partition chamber, where compounds are taken into parts and separated. The separated parts of compound with positive electric charges then turn due to speeding up of electric fields and magnetic fields and finally form a mass spectrum.

3. Notices on sampling:
a. Purified samples are expected when MS tests are required.
b. Samples shall be noted with related test information, e.g. melting point, boiling point, MW ranges, etc.
c. The best GC condition shall be noted before carrying out GC-MS tests.
d. Only 1 mg of solid or liquid sample is required. For clarifying doubts, more than 1mg of samples are suggested.
4. Charges:
a. EI: each sample carrying out low-resolution test costs 1,200 NTD, whereas sample carrying out high-resolution test costs 1,800 NTD.
b. FAB: each sample carrying out low-resolution test costs 1,500 NTD, whereas sample carrying out high-resolution test costs 2,500 NTD.
c. GC/MS: 2,500 NTD of fundamental charge for each sample, whereas an extra 30 minutes test costs 500 NTD more.
